Light
The phrase “light in the darkness” is a common theme throughout the Bible, and it serves as a reminder of God’s presence and faithfulness even amid difficult times. The book of Isaiah, for example, speaks of a coming Messiah who will be “a light for the nations” (Isaiah 42:6). Who will “bring light to those who live in darkness” (Isaiah 9:2). In the New Testament, Jesus himself is referred to as the “light of the world” (John 8:12) and his followers are called to be “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).
The idea of light in the darkness is not just a metaphorical concept, but it also has practical implications for how we live our lives as Christians. It means being a source of hope and encouragement to those around us who may be struggling or going through difficult times. It means shining the light of Christ’s love and truth into every situation, even when it may seem dark or hopeless. Ultimately, it means trusting God’s promise that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).
John 1:4-9
4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
John 8:12
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
1 John 1:5-7
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
Matthew 5:14-16
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Psalm 112:4-5
4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. 5 Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.
John 12:35
35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.
John 12:46
46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
Ephesians 5:8
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
Ephesians 5:13-14
13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible-and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
John 3:19-21
19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
2 Peter 1:19
19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
2 Corinthians 4:6
6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
Matthew 4:16
16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
Micah 7:8
8 Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.
Psalm 119:105
105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
1 John 1:5
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
Matthew 5:16
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Daniel 12:3
3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
Isaiah 60:1-3
1 “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. 2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. 3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
Psalm 43:3
3 Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.
